Eatec Corporation Named Vendor of Choice for Amtrak

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Emeryville, CA, October 19, 1998 - Amtrak, America's passenger railroad, has announced plans to implement Eatec Corporation's enterprise-wide Food & Beverage management solution, EatecNet.

Using EatecNet, Amtrak plans to increase efficiency and drive down food and operational costs - a significant step towards Amtrak's goal of operating self-sufficiency.

The complexity and sheer bulk of Amtrak's national operations has made this one of Eatec's most challenging installations to date. Today, Amtrak serves over 70 million people annually on its national network of trains and regional commuter services.

Throughout the various locations - whether a stationary commissary or a mobile dining car - EatecNet will track and manage Amtrak's entire foodservice operations, allowing:

  • real-time inventory levels, both at commissaries and on trains
  • purchase orders and transfers of inventory
  • menu engineering
  • sales forecasting

Amtrak operates 11 separate commissaries which provide food and beverage products to over 300 hundred dining cars travelling across the country. The EatecNet system at each regional commissary will be used to purchase, receive and transfer inventory to the trains.

Using EatecNet, commissary managers will determine exactly what is required for each dining car using forecasts based on sales history. This will significantly reduce over-ordering and spoilage, and ensure that sufficient product is on board to satisfy passenger choices.

Dining car managers will be able to purchase from the commissaries, add inventory along the trip, sell back any unused product, and restock for the next leg or return trip. The inventory and sales data for each dining car will be offloaded from the train's point-of-sale into the commissary's system. Once there, this data will then be transmitted to Amtrak's centralized corporate database via the Internet or a wide-area-network.

Amtrak's operations management will be able to run specific as well as consolidated reports by train, by commissary, or by region, giving Amtrak a precise account of their consumable usage and sales data across the United States. This detailed, real-time information from each remote unit will enable Amtrak corporate management to effectively streamline their operational procedures.
